Lance Cpl. Ryan John Nass, 21, of Franklin, Wisconsin, was a U.S. Marine killed in action on September 3, 2005, at Camp Blessing, Afghanistan.

Their Story

Ryan John Nass was a 21-year-old from Franklin, Wisconsin. He served as a Lance Corporal with Echo Company, 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, based out of Marine Corps Base Hawaii in Kaneohe Bay.

According to U.S. Department of Defense casualty reports, Nass was killed on September 3, 2005, at Camp Blessing, a forward operating base in Afghanistan's Kunar Province. The official release stated he died from wounds received during enemy small-arms fire while conducting combat operations.

Nass was killed during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In the summer and fall of 2005, U.S. and Afghan forces conducted counterinsurgency operations in the country's eastern provinces, including Kunar, an area known for rugged terrain and insurgent activity.

The Department of Defense announced his death on September 5, 2005. His body was returned to the United States, and he was buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia.

Lance Cpl. Nass is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Wisconsin Veterans Museum and on online veterans' memorials. His unit, the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marines, sustained multiple casualties during its 2005 deployment to Afghanistan.
