First Lieutenant Mohsin A. Naqvi was a 26-year-old American soldier from Newburgh, New York. He served as an officer in the U.S. Army, assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 11th Infantry Regiment, part of the 199th Infantry Brigade based at Fort Benning, Georgia.
On September 17, 2008, Naqvi died from wounds sustained in a hostile incident in Paktia Province, Afghanistan. The Department of Defense stated the incident occurred south of Forward Operating Base Gardez. Initial reports indicated his unit was engaged by enemy small-arms fire.
Naqvi's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In 2008, U.S. and allied forces were engaged in counterinsurgency operations against Taliban and other militant groups, with eastern provinces like Paktia seeing significant combat activity.
The Department of Defense announced Naqvi's death on September 19, 2008. He was posthumously promoted from the rank of Second Lieutenant to First Lieutenant. His remains were returned to the United States.
First Lieutenant Naqvi is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Traveling Tribute memorial and is listed on the iCasualties.org database for Operation Enduring Freedom. His name appears on the roster of service members killed in Afghanistan maintained by the U.S. Army.
