PFC Dustin Paul Napier, 20, of London, Kentucky, was a U.S. Army infantryman. He died on January 8, 2012, in Qalat, Afghanistan, during Operation Enduring Freedom.
Their Story
Dustin Paul Napier was a 20-year-old Private First Class from London, Kentucky. He was assigned to Company C, 1st Battalion, 24th Infantry Regiment, part of the 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team based at Fort Wainwright, Alaska.
On January 8, 2012, Napier was killed by enemy small arms fire in the Qalat district of Zabul province, Afghanistan. The U.S. Department of Defense announced his death the following day. He was reportedly on patrol when his unit came under attack.
Napier's death occurred during the final years of Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in 2001. By early 2012, a surge of U.S. forces had been drawn down, but combat operations continued, particularly in the country's volatile south and east.
His body was returned to Kentucky, where he was buried at the Napier Family Cemetery in London. The Laurel County Home Guard reportedly provided an honor guard for his funeral service.
PFC Napier was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and other service medals. His name is inscribed on the Kentucky Veterans Memorial in Frankfort and is listed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the University of Kentucky.
