Their Story

Scott Thomas Nagorski was born on October 28, 1983, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He grew up in the suburb of Greenfield and graduated from Greenfield High School in 2002. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and was assigned as an infantryman to Company A, 1st Battalion, 327th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

On November 14, 2010, Specialist Nagorski was on a dismounted patrol in the rugged Watapur District of eastern Afghanistan's Konar Province. According to the Department of Defense, his unit was engaged by enemy small arms fire. Nagorski was killed in the ensuing firefight. He was 27 years old.

Nagorski's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. By late 2010, the conflict was in its ninth year, with a significant focus on counterinsurgency operations in Afghanistan's eastern provinces like Konar, a known insurgent transit area bordering Pakistan.

The Department of Defense announced his death on November 16, 2010. He was posthumously promoted to the rank of Specialist. His body was returned to Wisconsin, where a funeral service was held at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hales Corners. He was buried with military honors at Southern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Union Grove.

Nagorski is memorialized on the Greenfield High School Veterans Memorial and the 101st Airborne Division memorial at Fort Campbell. In 2011, a street in Greenfield was renamed 'Scott T. Nagorski Drive' in his honor.
