Musa Khan Khel
Musa Khan Khel was a Pakistani journalist working for Aaj TV. He was shot and killed on February 17, 2009, in Buner, Pakistan.
Their Story
Musa Khan Khel was a correspondent for the private Pakistani television news channel Aaj TV. He was based in the Buner District of Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, a region where journalists often reported on complex security issues.
On February 17, 2009, Khel was returning from covering a peace committee meeting in Buner. According to reports, unidentified gunmen opened fire on his vehicle. He was shot and died at the scene. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.
The killing occurred during a period of intense militant activity and military operations in Pakistan's northwestern regions, often referred to as the Pakistani Taliban insurgency. Journalists working in these conflict zones faced significant risks from all sides, including militant groups, criminal elements, and state security forces.
The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) documented Khel's death and condemned the attack. His killing was part of a deadly year for Pakistani media; the CPJ reported that at least seven journalists were killed in the country in 2009, with many deaths occurring in the volatile northwest.
Khel's death highlighted the extreme dangers faced by local reporters covering conflict in their own communities. He is listed on memorials for fallen journalists maintained by international press freedom organizations.
