Sgt. 1st Class Dennis Ray Murray was a 38-year-old soldier from Red Boiling Springs, Tennessee. He served with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2nd Battalion, 34th Armor Regiment, 1st Heavy Brigade Combat Team, based at Fort Riley, Kansas.
On November 21, 2011, Murray was killed by enemy small arms fire in the village of Pa'in Kelay, located in Afghanistan's volatile Kunar Province. He was part of a unit operating in the region near the Pakistan border.
Murray's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. His battalion was deployed as part of a surge of forces aimed at stabilizing the country before a planned transition of security responsibilities.
