Their Story
Christopher Lee Muniz was a 24-year-old sergeant from the small community of New Cuyama, California. He served in the U.S. Army with Company B, 3rd Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, based at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii.
On December 11, 2011, Muniz was killed by enemy small-arms fire during a dismounted patrol in the volatile Khas Kunar District of Kunar Province, Afghanistan. The district, bordering Pakistan, was a known insurgent transit area and a frequent site of combat operations.
Muniz's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. The operation involved counter-insurgency missions and the training of Afghan security forces, with eastern provinces like Kunar seeing intense fighting.
Following his death, Muniz was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and Meritorious Service Medal. His body was returned to the United States, and a memorial service was held in his hometown.
He is remembered by family, friends, and fellow soldiers. His name is inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Schofield Barracks Post Cemetery in Hawaii.
