U.S. Army Sergeant Rodrigo Amilca Munguiarivas, 27, of Germantown, Maryland, died in a hostile incident in Bagram, Afghanistan, on June 21, 2009.

Their Story

Rodrigo Amilca Munguiarivas was a 27-year-old sergeant from Germantown, Maryland. He served with Company B, 710th Brigade Support Battalion, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, based at Fort Drum, New York. The unit deployed to Afghanistan in early 2009 as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.

On June 21, 2009, Sergeant Munguiarivas was killed in Bagram, Afghanistan. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, his death resulted from a hostile incident. The specific details of the event, such as whether it involved small arms fire, an indirect fire attack, or an improvised explosive device, were not detailed in the initial casualty release.

Operation Enduring Freedom was the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. By 2009, the conflict was in a period of intense fighting as U.S. troop levels surged. Bagram Airfield, a major coalition base north of Kabul, was a frequent target for insurgent rocket and mortar attacks, though it also served as a hub for logistics and support personnel like those in Munguiarivas's unit.

His death was reported by several news outlets, including The Washington Post, which listed him among local service members killed in the wars. The Army posthumously awarded him the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and Meritorious Service Medal. He was survived by his wife and children.

Sergeant Munguiarivas is memorialized on the 10th Mountain Division memorial at Fort Drum and on online veterans' memorials. His name appears on Panel 64W, Line 28 of the Afghanistan War Memorial at the National Infantry Museum.
