Their Story
William Joseph Mulvihill was a 20-year-old soldier from Leavenworth, Kansas. He served as a Specialist with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, Special Troops Battalion, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, based at Fort Hood, Texas. He was deployed to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.
On August 2, 2008, Mulvihill died from wounds sustained in a hostile incident in Asadabad, the capital of Kunar Province in eastern Afghanistan. The Department of Defense announced his death the following day. No further operational details of the incident were publicly released.
Mulvihill's death occurred during a period of intense fighting in Afghanistan's eastern provinces. Insurgent activity in Kunar Province, particularly near the Pakistani border, was frequent. U.S. and allied forces conducted counterinsurgency operations there throughout 2008.
Following his death, Mulvihill's body was returned to the United States. He was buried in Leavenworth National Cemetery in Kansas. His family and community in Leavenworth mourned his loss, as noted in local news reports at the time.
