Their Story
Brandon Scott Mullins was born in Owensboro, Kentucky, and entered the U.S. Army as an infantryman. He was assigned to Company C, 3rd Battalion, 21st Infantry Regiment, 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, based out of Fort Wainwright, Alaska. He deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
On August 25, 2011, Specialist Mullins was killed in Bazaare, a village in the volatile Zhari District of Kandahar Province. According to the Department of Defense, his death resulted from hostile enemy action. The area was a known insurgent stronghold and a focus of U.S. and coalition clearing operations at the time.
Mullins's death occurred during the latter stages of the U.S. troop surge in Afghanistan, a period marked by intense counterinsurgency operations in the country's south and east. The goal of these operations was to degrade Taliban influence and bolster Afghan government control before a planned transition of security responsibilities.
Following his death, the Department of Defense officially announced his loss. He was posthumously promoted from Private First Class to Specialist. His body was returned to Kentucky, where he was buried in Owensboro's Rosehill Cemetery.
Mullins is remembered on memorials in his hometown and at Fort Wainwright. His name is inscribed on Panel 29E, Line 33 of the Afghanistan War Memorial at the National Infantry Museum in Georgia.
