Their Story
Ian Matthew Muller was a 22-year-old Marine from Danville, Vermont. He served as a corporal with the 2nd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, part of Regimental Combat Team 1, I Marine Expeditionary Force Forward, based out of Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.
Corporal Muller died on March 11, 2011, in Helmand province, Afghanistan. The Department of Defense stated his death was the result of hostile action. No further specifics regarding the incident were released in the initial announcement.
Muller's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In 2011, Helmand province was a major center of combat operations, where U.S. and allied forces engaged Taliban insurgents in a period of intense fighting following a troop surge.
Following his death, Muller's body was returned to Vermont. A funeral service was held in his hometown of Danville. The governor of Vermont ordered flags to be flown at half-staff in his honor.
Ian Muller is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Veterans Memorial Park in Colchester, Vermont. His name is also inscribed on Panel 31E, Line 20 of the Afghanistan War Memorial at the National Infantry Museum in Georgia.
