Mullen, Sean William
Chief Warrant Officer Sean William Mullen, 39, of Dover, Delaware, was a U.S. Army Special Forces soldier. He died on June 2, 2013, from hostile fire at Bastion Air Base in Helmand Province, Afghanistan.

Chief Warrant Officer Sean William Mullen, 39, was a soldier assigned to Company B, 2nd Battalion, 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne), based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. The 5th Special Forces Group, known as the 'Legion,' has a long history of operations in the Middle East and Central Asia. Mullen was from Dover, Delaware.
Mullen died on June 2, 2013, at Camp Bastion, a large British-run air base adjacent to Camp Leatherneck in Helmand Province. According to the Department of Defense, he was killed by enemy small-arms fire. The incident occurred during a partnered security operation on the base perimeter, reportedly while he was engaged with Afghan National Army forces.
Mullen's death came during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By 2013, the mission had shifted toward training and advising Afghan security forces as international troops prepared to withdraw. Helmand Province remained a contested region with frequent insurgent activity.
The Department of Defense announced Mullen's death on June 3, 2013. He was posthumously promoted from Warrant Officer 1 to Chief Warrant Officer 2. His awards included the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart.
Mullen is memorialized on the Afghanistan War casualty lists and at the 5th Special Forces Group memorial at Fort Campbell. His name is included on the Special Operations Memorial Wall at the U.S. Army Special Operations Command headquarters at Fort Liberty, North Carolina.
