Their Story
Christopher Waugh Mulalley was a 26-year-old sergeant from Eureka, California. He served with Troop B, 1st Squadron, 3rd Cavalry Regiment, based at Fort Hood, Texas. The unit deployed to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.
Sergeant Mulalley died on August 22, 2014, in Gardez, the capital of Afghanistan's eastern Paktia Province. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, he was killed by small arms fire during a dismounted patrol. The patrol was reportedly engaged by enemy forces.
Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan, began in October 2001. By 2014, the mission had shifted to a train, advise, and assist role as international combat forces prepared to withdraw. Paktia Province, bordering Pakistan, remained an area of significant insurgent activity.
The Pentagon announced Mulalley's death in a press release on August 25, 2014. He was survived by his mother and father. His name is recorded on the Afghanistan War Memorial at Fort Hood and on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall of Faces online.
Sergeant Mulalley was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. His name is inscribed on Panel 21W, Line 105 of the Afghanistan War Memorial at the National Infantry Museum in Columbus, Georgia.
