Their Story

Shawn Andrew Muhr was a 26-year-old specialist from Coon Rapids, Iowa. He served in the U.S. Army with the 546th Transportation Company, 330th Transportation Battalion, part of the 82nd Sustainment Brigade based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. His unit was deployed to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.

On January 29, 2011, Muhr was killed in a hostile incident approximately 10 kilometers northeast of Budwan, in Afghanistan's Ghazni province. According to the Department of Defense, his vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device (IED) while on a mounted patrol. He was one of two soldiers killed in the attack.

Operation Enduring Freedom was the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. The mission initially focused on dismantling al-Qaeda and removing the Taliban from power, later shifting to counterinsurgency and training Afghan forces. By 2011, the conflict was in its tenth year, with IEDs representing a leading cause of casualties for coalition forces.

The Department of Defense announced Muhr's death on January 31, 2011. His body was returned to the United States. A memorial service was held in his hometown of Coon Rapids, where he was remembered by family and community members.

Specialist Muhr's name is inscribed on the Iowa Veterans Memorial and is listed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Veterans Memorial Building in Des Moines. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and other service medals.
