Their Story
Nickolas Anthony Mueller was a 26-year-old U.S. Army sergeant from Little Chute, Wisconsin. He served with Company B, 3rd Battalion, 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (Airborne), based at Hunter Army Airfield in Georgia.
On October 26, 2009, Sergeant Mueller was killed in Darreh-ye Bum, a village in Wardak Province, Afghanistan. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, his death was the result of a hostile incident. The 160th SOAR, known as the 'Night Stalkers,' provides aviation support for special operations forces, often in high-risk missions.
Mueller's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In late 2009, U.S. forces were engaged in intense counterinsurgency operations, particularly in eastern provinces like Wardak, which saw frequent attacks by Taliban and other insurgent groups.
Following his death, Mueller was returned to Wisconsin. He was buried in Holy Cross Cemetery in Kaukauna. His family and community in Little Chute held memorial services, and his name is inscribed on the Wisconsin Veterans Memorial at the Resch Center in Ashwaubenon.
