Their Story

Brian Keith Mowery was a 49-year-old staff sergeant from Halifax, Pennsylvania. He served with the Pennsylvania Army National Guard's 131st Transportation Company, 728th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, based in Williamstown. According to his unit's designation, he was part of the logistical support network for Operation Enduring Freedom.

On July 18, 2011, Mowery was killed while traveling on Highway 1, a major road linking Kabul to Kandahar that was frequently contested. The Department of Defense stated his death was the result of a hostile incident, though specific details of the attack were not widely released in initial reports. He was one of several U.S. service members to die in Afghanistan that month.

Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military intervention in Afghanistan, began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. By 2011, the conflict was in its tenth year, with international forces engaged in counterinsurgency operations and training Afghan national security forces. Highway 1 was a critical and dangerous supply route.

Mowery's death was reported by the Defense Casualty Analysis System on the day he died. The Patriot-News in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, noted his passing among local casualties. He was survived by his family in Halifax.

Staff Sgt. Mowery's name is inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Pennsylvania National Guard headquarters at Fort Indiantown Gap. He is remembered by his unit and community as a soldier who served in a vital, high-risk support role.
