Their Story
Sky Russell Mote was a Staff Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps. He served with the 1st Marine Special Operations Battalion, based at Camp Pendleton, California, and was a native of El Dorado, California.
According to the Department of Defense, Mote died on August 10, 2012, in Helmand province, Afghanistan. He was killed while supporting combat operations in the volatile southern region of the country.
Mote's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. The war was characterized by counterinsurgency operations against Taliban and other militant forces, with Helmand province being a focal point of intense fighting for years.
The Marine Corps confirmed his death in a press release. He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart medal. Public records and memorial pages list his burial at Arlington National Cemetery.
