Their Story
Donald Scott Morrison was a 23-year-old soldier from Cincinnati, Ohio. He served on active duty with the U.S. Army's 584th Mobility Augmentation Company, 20th Engineer Battalion, 36th Engineer Brigade, based out of Fort Hood, Texas.
Specialist Morrison died on September 26, 2010, at Forward Operating Base Frontenac in Afghanistan's Kandahar province. According to U.S. Department of Defense casualty reports, his death was the result of a hostile incident. He was reportedly killed by enemy small arms fire while on guard duty.
Morrison's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In late 2010, the conflict was focused on a major coalition offensive in Kandahar province, where FOB Frontenac was a key logistics hub for operations in the volatile Arghandab River Valley.
Following his death, Morrison was posthumously promoted from Private First Class to Specialist. He was survived by his mother, father, and sister. A memorial service was held for him at Fort Hood on October 7, 2010.
Morrison is remembered on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Ohio Statehouse in Columbus. His name is also inscribed on Panel 6R, Line 127 of the Ohio Fallen Heroes Memorial in Sunbury.
