Their Story
Darby Todd Morin was a 25-year-old soldier from Victoria, Texas. He served as a Sergeant in Bravo Company, 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry Regiment, part of Task Force Spartan under the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF).
According to the U.S. Department of Defense, Sergeant Morin died on August 22, 2009, from wounds sustained when insurgents attacked his unit using indirect fire at Forward Operating Base Shank. The base, located in Logar Province, was a frequent target for rocket and mortar attacks.
Morin's death occurred during a period of intensified fighting in the Afghanistan War, known as Operation Enduring Freedom. By 2009, Taliban forces had regrouped, and the use of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and indirect fire against coalition bases was rising sharply as U.S. troop levels increased.
The Department of Defense announced his death on August 24, 2009. He was posthumously promoted to the rank of Sergeant. His awards reportedly include the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart.
Sergeant Morin is remembered on memorial walls in Texas and by veterans' groups. His name is inscribed on the Victoria County Veterans Memorial.
