U.S. Army Private First Class Gil Isai Moralesdelvalle, 21, of Jacksonville, Florida, was killed in action on August 3, 2011, in the Maidan Shahr District of Afghanistan's Wardak province.
Their Story
Gil Isai Moralesdelvalle was a 21-year-old soldier from Jacksonville, Florida. He served as a Private First Class with Company A, 2nd Battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, based out of Fort Polk, Louisiana. He was deployed to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.
On August 3, 2011, Moralesdelvalle died in the Maidan Shahr District of Wardak province, west of Kabul. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, his death was the result of hostile enemy action. He was one of two U.S. soldiers killed in the district that day.
Moralesdelvalle's death occurred during the latter stages of the U.S. troop surge in Afghanistan, a period marked by intense counterinsurgency operations. The Maidan Shahr District was a known area of insurgent activity, where coalition forces frequently engaged in combat operations.
His death was reported by multiple news outlets, including the Florida Times-Union. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and other commendations. His remains were returned to the United States for burial.
Moralesdelvalle is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville and on online veterans' memorials. His unit, the 4th Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, continued its deployment until returning to Fort Polk in late 2011.
