Sergeant Raymundo Porras Morales was a 34-year-old soldier from Dalton, Georgia. He served with Company D, 148th Brigade Support Battalion, part of the Georgia Army National Guard based in Cedartown.
According to the U.S. Department of Defense, Morales died on July 21, 2009, in Methar Lam, the capital of Laghman province in eastern Afghanistan. He was killed by small arms fire while on a mounted patrol, according to military reports. The area was a known insurgent stronghold.
Morales's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By 2009, the conflict had intensified, with a surge of U.S. forces deployed to counter a resilient Taliban insurgency, particularly in the country's eastern provinces.
The Pentagon announced his death the following day. He was reportedly the 784th U.S. service member to die in Afghanistan since 2001. His body was returned to the United States, and he was buried with military honors.
Sergeant Morales is memorialized on the Georgia National Guard Fallen Heroes website and at the Global War on Terrorism memorial at Fort Moore, Georgia. His name is also inscribed on Panel 23W, Line 111 of the Afghanistan War Memorial at the National Infantry Museum.
