Sgt. Samson Augusto Mora, 28, of Barrigada, Guam, was a U.S. Army National Guard soldier killed in a hostile incident in Babo Kheyl, Afghanistan, on July 10, 2008.
Their Story
Samson Augusto Mora was a 28-year-old sergeant from Barrigada, Guam. He served with Company A, 1st Battalion, 294th Infantry Regiment, a unit of the Guam Army National Guard.
On July 10, 2008, Mora was killed in Babo Kheyl, a village in the volatile Paktika Province of eastern Afghanistan. According to U.S. military reports, his unit was conducting a dismounted patrol when it came under enemy small-arms fire. Mora died from wounds sustained in that engagement.
Mora's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In mid-2008, U.S. and allied forces were engaged in intense counterinsurgency operations, particularly in the country's eastern regions along the border with Pakistan.
Following his death, Mora's body was returned to Guam. A memorial service was held at the Guam National Guard Readiness Center in Barrigada. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart.
Sgt. Mora is memorialized on the Guam Veterans Memorial Wall and is listed on the Fallen Heroes Memorial of the Guam Army National Guard. His name is also inscribed on Panel 52W, Line 28 of the Afghanistan War Memorial at the National Infantry Museum in Georgia.
