Their Story
Cody Otho Moosman was a 24-year-old soldier from Preston, Idaho. He served as an infantryman with Company B, 1st Battalion, 28th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, based at Fort Riley, Kansas.
On July 3, 2012, Specialist Moosman was killed in Orgun-e, Paktika province, Afghanistan. The U.S. Department of Defense stated his death was the result of hostile enemy action. He was one of two soldiers from his battalion killed that day; the other was Specialist Jose J. Reyes.
Moosman's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In 2012, the conflict was in its eleventh year, with U.S. and allied forces engaged in counterinsurgency operations, particularly in the volatile eastern provinces bordering Pakistan.
Following his death, the Army posthumously awarded Moosman the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and other commendations. His body was returned to Idaho, where a funeral service was held in Preston. Local news reported that hundreds of community members lined the streets during the procession.
Specialist Moosman is remembered on memorials in his hometown and at Fort Riley. His name is inscribed on the 1st Infantry Division Memorial at Fort Riley, Kansas, which honors soldiers of the division killed in Afghanistan and Iraq.
