U.S. Army Specialist Christopher James Moon, 20, of Tucson, Arizona, died on July 13, 2010, at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany from wounds sustained in Afghanistan.

Their Story

Christopher James Moon was a 20-year-old soldier from Tucson, Arizona. He served as a Specialist in the U.S. Army, assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2nd Battalion, 508th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. His unit deployed to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.

According to the U.S. Department of Defense, Moon was wounded in combat in the Arghandab District of Kandahar Province, Afghanistan, on July 10, 2010. He was evacuated to the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany for treatment, where he died from his injuries three days later, on July 13.

Moon's death occurred during a period of intense fighting in southern Afghanistan. In the summer of 2010, U.S. and allied forces launched a major offensive in Kandahar, a Taliban stronghold. The Arghandab District, a rural area with extensive orchards and irrigation canals, was a frequent site of insurgent activity and complex ambushes.

The Pentagon officially announced Moon's death on July 14, 2010. His hometown newspaper, the Arizona Daily Star, reported his passing and noted he was a 2008 graduate of Flowing Wells High School. His death was recorded by the Defense Department and memorialized on casualty lists.

Specialist Moon was one of 2,356 American service members who died during Operation Enduring Freedom. He is remembered on memorial walls and by veterans' organizations that honor the fallen from the 508th Infantry Regiment.
