U.S. Army Private First Class Diego Miguel Montoya, 20, of San Antonio, Texas, was killed in action on September 2, 2010, at Forward Operating Base Mehtar Lam, Afghanistan.

Their Story

Diego Miguel Montoya was a 20-year-old soldier from San Antonio, Texas. He served as a Private First Class with the 64th Military Police Company, 205th Military Police Battalion, based out of Fort Hood, Texas.

On September 2, 2010, Montoya was killed at Forward Operating Base Mehtar Lam in Laghman Province, Afghanistan. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, he died of wounds sustained from enemy small arms fire.

His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By 2010, the conflict was in its ninth year, with a focus on counterinsurgency operations and training Afghan security forces.

The Pentagon announced his death on September 4, 2010. He was posthumously promoted to the rank of Private First Class. His body was returned to Texas for burial.

Montoya is memorialized on the Afghanistan War casualty lists and by veterans' organizations. His name appears on the 9/11 Memorial & Museum's 'Enduring Freedom' casualty registry.
