Montgomery, Thaddeus Scott Ii
Staff Sergeant Thaddeus Scott Montgomery II, 29, of West Yellowstone, Montana, was killed in action on January 20, 2010, at a combat outpost in the Korengal Valley, Afghanistan.
Their Story
Staff Sergeant Thaddeus Scott Montgomery II was a 29-year-old infantryman from West Yellowstone, Montana. He served with Bravo Company, 2nd Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, based at Fort Carson, Colorado. His military service included deployments to the Philippines and the Horn of Africa prior to his assignment to Afghanistan.
On January 20, 2010, Montgomery was killed by enemy small arms fire while his unit was engaged in combat operations at Combat Outpost (COP) Michigan in the Korengal Valley of eastern Afghanistan's Kunar Province. The outpost, part of a network of positions in the Korengal, was frequently targeted by insurgent forces.
Montgomery's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. The Korengal Valley, a remote and mountainous region bordering Pakistan, was the scene of intense fighting and was considered one of the most dangerous postings for U.S. forces. American troops withdrew from the Korengal in April 2010, months after Montgomery was killed.
Montgomery was posthumously promoted from Sergeant to Staff Sergeant. He was survived by his wife, parents, and siblings. His body was returned to the United States, and he was buried with military honors.
He is memorialized on the 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division memorial at Fort Carson and on online veterans' memorials. His unit, the 2nd Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, sustained significant casualties during its deployment to the Korengal Valley.
