Lance Cpl. Osbrany Montes De Oca, 20, of North Arlington, New Jersey, was a U.S. Marine killed in Helmand province, Afghanistan, on February 10, 2012.

Their Story

Osbrany Montes De Oca was a 20-year-old from North Arlington, New Jersey. He served as a Lance Corporal in the United States Marine Corps, assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, Regimental Combat Team 5, of the II Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward), based at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

On February 10, 2012, Montes De Oca was killed by enemy small-arms fire while conducting combat operations in the volatile Helmand province of southern Afghanistan. He was part of a sustained coalition presence in the region during a period of intense fighting.

His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. By early 2012, the conflict was in its eleventh year, with a significant focus on counterinsurgency operations in Helmand and neighboring Kandahar provinces.

His death was officially recorded in the Defense Casualty Analysis System. The Department of Defense announced his death in a press release, and his name was added to the casualty lists published by major news organizations.

Montes De Oca is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the National Museum of the United States Army and on local memorials in New Jersey. His name is listed on the 'Faces of the Fallen' database maintained by The Washington Post.
