Osbrany Montes De Oca was a 20-year-old from North Arlington, New Jersey. He served as a Lance Corporal in the United States Marine Corps, assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, Regimental Combat Team 5, of the II Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward), based at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.
On February 10, 2012, Montes De Oca was killed by enemy small-arms fire while conducting combat operations in the volatile Helmand province of southern Afghanistan. He was part of a sustained coalition presence in the region during a period of intense fighting.
His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks.
