Corporal Christopher Michael Monahan Jr., 25, of Island Heights, New Jersey, was a U.S. Marine killed in Helmand province, Afghanistan, on November 26, 2012.
Their Story
Christopher Michael Monahan Jr. was a 25-year-old Marine from Island Heights, New Jersey. He served with Combat Logistics Battalion 2, Combat Logistics Regiment 15, part of the 2nd Marine Logistics Group based at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. His service reportedly included deployments to Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.
On November 26, 2012, Corporal Monahan was killed by hostile fire in Helmand province, a volatile region in southern Afghanistan. The U.S. Department of Defense confirmed his death in a press release. He was one of several Marines killed in the province that month.
Monahan died during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By late 2012, U.S. and coalition forces were engaged in a sustained counterinsurgency effort, with Helmand province being a focal point of intense combat against Taliban insurgents.
Following his death, Monahan's body was returned to the United States. A funeral service was held in his hometown. The Marine Corps posthumously awarded him the Purple Heart.
Corporal Monahan is remembered on memorial walls dedicated to fallen service members from New Jersey. His name is also inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Garden of Reflection in Yardley, Pennsylvania.
