U.S. Army Sergeant Jacob Molina, 27, of Houston, Texas, died on July 19, 2011, at Forward Operating Base Bostick in Kunar Province, Afghanistan.

Their Story

Sergeant Jacob Molina was a soldier assigned to Company B, 2nd Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, based at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii. The 27-year-old from Houston, Texas, had served on deployments to the Philippines and the Horn of Africa before his assignment to Afghanistan.

On July 19, 2011, Molina was killed by enemy small arms fire at Forward Operating Base Bostick in the rugged Kunar Province of eastern Afghanistan. The base, later renamed FOB Fiaz, was a remote outpost near the Pakistani border frequently targeted by insurgent attacks.

Molina's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By mid-2011, U.S. forces were in a period of transition, having surged to a peak of roughly 100,000 troops the previous year and beginning a gradual drawdown while continuing combat operations, particularly in volatile eastern provinces like Kunar.

The Department of Defense announced Molina's death the following day. He was posthumously promoted from Specialist to Sergeant. His unit, part of the 25th Infantry Division, continued its mission in Kunar Province.

Sergeant Molina is memorialized on the 25th Infantry Division's casualty list and on the Afghanistan War casualty roll at the National Archives. His name is inscribed on the Afghanistan and Iraq War Memorial at Schofield Barracks.
