Mois?s S?nchez Cerezo
Moisés Sánchez Cerezo was a Mexican journalist for the newspaper La Unión in Veracruz. He was abducted from his home in Medellín de Bravo on January 2, 2015, and was later found dead.
Their Story
Moisés Sánchez Cerezo was the founder and director of the local newspaper La Unión in Medellín de Bravo, Veracruz. His reporting focused on crime and local government corruption in his municipality, a common but dangerous beat for regional journalists in Mexico.
On the evening of January 2, 2015, a group of armed men arrived at Sánchez's home in Medellín de Bravo and abducted him. His family reported the kidnapping to authorities. His body was discovered days later, on January 24, in a neighboring municipality. An autopsy reportedly confirmed he died from asphyxiation by strangulation.
Sánchez's killing occurred within the broader context of violence against journalists in Mexico, particularly in the state of Veracruz. During this period, the state was considered one of the most dangerous places for reporters in the country, with numerous journalists killed or disappeared, often with impunity.
The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) confirmed his death was work-related. The case drew international condemnation from press freedom groups. In 2017, a former municipal police officer was convicted for the murder, but the intellectual authors of the crime were not identified or prosecuted.
Sánchez is memorialized by press freedom organizations as a journalist killed for his work. His case remains a prominent example of the risks faced by local reporters in Mexico who investigate crime and corruption.
