U.S. Army Specialist Kelly Joseph Mixon, 23, of Yulee, Florida, died on December 8, 2010, in Chehel Gazi, Afghanistan, from wounds sustained in a hostile incident.

Their Story

Kelly Joseph Mixon was a Specialist in the United States Army, assigned to Company B, 3rd Squadron, 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment, based in Vilseck, Germany. He was from Yulee, a community in Nassau County, Florida.

According to the Department of Defense, Mixon died on December 8, 2010, in Chehel Gazi, a village in Kandahar province, southern Afghanistan. He was reportedly killed by an improvised explosive device while on a dismounted patrol. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack.

Mixon's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. In late 2010, the conflict was marked by a significant U.S. troop surge, with intense counterinsurgency operations focused on Taliban strongholds in provinces like Kandahar.

His death was announced by the Department of Defense. Local media in Florida reported that Mixon was remembered by family and friends as a dedicated soldier who had wanted to serve since childhood.

Specialist Mixon is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the National Infantry Museum in Columbus, Georgia, and on online veterans' memorials. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and other service medals.
