Their Story
Shaun Michael Mittler was a 32-year-old Staff Sergeant from Austin, Texas. He served with Company A, 1st Battalion, 327th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, based out of Fort Campbell, Kentucky.
According to U.S. Department of Defense casualty reports, Mittler died on July 10, 2010, at Combat Outpost (COP) Able Main in Afghanistan. The official cause was listed as hostile action. The outpost was located in the volatile Kunar Province, a region known for insurgent activity.
Mittler's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. His unit was part of a significant troop surge ordered in 2009 to counter Taliban influence. The 1st Battalion, 327th Infantry Regiment was engaged in counterinsurgency operations in eastern Afghanistan.
The Army confirmed his death in a press release. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and Meritorious Service Medal. His remains were returned to the United States.
Staff Sergeant Mittler is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at Fort Campbell and on online veterans' memorials. His name appears on Panel 7W, Line 109 of the Afghanistan Conflict Memorial Wall at the National Infantry Museum.
