Their Story
Sergeant First Class Sean Kerry Mitchell was a U.S. Army Special Forces soldier assigned to Headquarters and Support Company, 1st Battalion, 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne). His unit was based in Stuttgart, Germany, and his service reportedly included deployments to Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa as part of the U.S. military's counterterrorism efforts.
On July 7, 2007, Mitchell was killed in Kidal, a remote town in northeastern Mali. According to U.S. Department of Defense statements, he died from wounds sustained during a firefight with enemy forces. The incident occurred during a mission in the region.
Mitchell's death took place under the umbrella of Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF), the U.S.-led campaign that began in October 2001. While primarily focused on Afghanistan, OEF included a Trans-Saharan component (OEF-TS) aimed at countering extremist groups in North and West Africa. By 2007, operations in this theater involved training local forces and conducting reconnaissance missions.
The U.S. Army confirmed Mitchell's death in a press release, noting he was supporting OEF. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal with Valor and the Purple Heart. His remains were returned to the United States.
Sean Mitchell is memorialized on the Special Operations Memorial Wall at U.S. Army Special Operations Command headquarters at Fort Liberty, North Carolina (formerly Fort Bragg). His name is also inscribed on the Afghanistan and Iraq War Memorial at the Presidio of Monterey, California.
