Mitchell, David Seth

David Seth Mitchell was a 30-year-old Marine Corps Captain from Loveland, Ohio. He served as an active-duty officer with Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 367 (HMLA-367), Marine Aircraft Group 40, part of the 2nd Marine Expeditionary Brigade (Forward) and the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, based at Camp Pendleton, California.

Captain Mitchell died on October 26, 2009, at Forward Operating Base Dwyer in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. According to the Defense Casualty Analysis System, he was killed in action. The Department of Defense stated he died while supporting combat operations, though the precise tactical details of the incident were not publicly detailed in major news reports.

His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By 2009, the conflict was in a period of intense fighting, particularly in southern provinces like Helmand, where U.S. and allied forces engaged in counterinsurgency operations against a resurgent Taliban. Improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and direct fire were common threats.
