Petty Officer Third Class Denis Miranda, 24, of Toms River, New Jersey, was a U.S. Navy SEAL assigned to SEAL Team Four. He was killed in action in Qalat, Afghanistan, on September 21, 2010.

Their Story

Denis Miranda was a 24-year-old sailor from Toms River, New Jersey, who served as a Petty Officer Third Class with the United States Navy's elite Naval Special Warfare Command. He was a member of SEAL Team Four, a unit specializing in special reconnaissance and direct action missions, primarily in Central and South America. According to public records, his service also included deployments to the Philippines and the Horn of Africa.

On September 21, 2010, Miranda was killed during combat operations in Qalat, the capital of Zabul province in southern Afghanistan. The Department of Defense announced he died of wounds sustained from an improvised explosive device (IED) blast while on patrol. He was the only U.S. service member killed in the incident, which occurred during a period of intense fighting in the region.

Miranda's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By 2010, the conflict was in its ninth year, marked by a significant troop surge and a focus on counter-insurgency operations in Taliban strongholds like Zabul province. The use of IEDs by insurgent forces was a leading cause of casualties for coalition troops.

Miranda's death was recorded in the Defense Casualty Analysis System on the day he died. His body was returned to the United States, and he was buried at the Brigadier General William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Wrightstown, New Jersey. A local newspaper, the Asbury Park Press, reported on his funeral and noted he was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star medals.

He is remembered on memorial walls dedicated to fallen SEALs and is listed on the Navy SEAL Foundation's roll of honor. In his hometown, his name is inscribed on a memorial for local veterans killed in the Global War on Terror.
