Their Story

Joseph Alan Miracle was a 22-year-old soldier from Ortonville, Michigan. He served as a Private First Class with Company A, 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, part of the 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team based in Vicenza, Italy.

On July 5, 2007, Miracle was killed during combat operations in the Watapor Valley of Afghanistan's Kunar Province. According to U.S. military reports, his unit was engaged in a firefight with enemy forces in the mountainous region near the Pakistan border.

Miracle's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001.
