Their Story

Staff Sergeant Joshua M. Mills was a 24-year-old soldier from El Paso, Texas. He served with Company A, 3rd Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne), based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. According to the U.S. Army, his service included deployments to Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.

On September 16, 2009, Mills was killed by enemy small-arms fire during combat operations in the village of Ghur Ghuri, located in Afghanistan's Nuristan province. The operation was reportedly part of a larger effort to clear insurgent forces from the area. He was one of two U.S. soldiers killed in the engagement.

Mills died during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By 2009, the conflict was in a period of intense fighting as insurgent forces had regrouped and expanded their influence in rural regions like Nuristan, leading to increased coalition operations.

Following his death, Mills was posthumously promoted from Sergeant to Staff Sergeant. He was survived by his wife and a young daughter. A memorial service was held at Fort Bragg, and he was buried with full military honors.

Mills was awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and Meritorious Service Medal for his service. His name is inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Airborne & Special Operations Museum in Fayetteville, North Carolina.
