Their Story

Private First Class Errol Duran Aster Milliard was an 18-year-old soldier from Birmingham, Alabama. He served as a combat engineer with the 595th Engineer Company, 2nd Engineer Battalion, 36th Engineer Brigade, based at White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico. According to the Department of Defense, he was deployed to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.

Milliard died on July 4, 2013, in Farah province, in western Afghanistan. The Department of Defense stated his death was the result of hostile enemy action. He was reportedly killed by small arms fire during a dismounted patrol, according to contemporaneous news reports summarizing the military's announcement.

Milliard's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In 2013, the war was in a period where U.S. and allied forces were conducting counterinsurgency operations and training Afghan National Security Forces, with a focus on regional commands like the one covering Farah.

Following his death, the Department of Defense officially announced the casualty. His body was returned to the United States. Local news outlets in Alabama reported on his death and memorial services held in his hometown of Birmingham.

PFC Milliard was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and other service medals. He is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Birmingham Veterans Memorial and on online veterans' remembrance pages.
