Their Story
First Lieutenant Scott Francis Milley was a 23-year-old officer from Sudbury, Massachusetts. He was assigned to Company C, 2nd Battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, based at Fort Polk, Louisiana.
According to the U.S. Department of Defense, Milley died on November 30, 2010, in the Baraki Barak district of Afghanistan's eastern Konar province. The official casualty report listed the cause as hostile fire. He was reportedly leading a foot patrol when his unit was struck by an improvised explosive device.
Milley's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In late 2010, U.S. forces were engaged in a significant troop surge, with intense counterinsurgency operations focused on provinces like Konar along the Pakistan border.
The Department of Defense announced his death on December 1, 2010. His body was returned to Massachusetts, where a funeral service was held. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart.
Milley was remembered by his unit and community as a dedicated leader. In 2011, a new athletic field at Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School, his alma mater, was named 'Milley Field' in his honor.
