U.S. Army Specialist Harley D R Miller, 21, of Spokane, Washington, was killed in action on November 27, 2004, in Bamian, Afghanistan.

Their Story

Harley D R Miller was a 21-year-old soldier from Spokane, Washington. He served with B Troop, 3rd Squadron, 4th Cavalry Regiment, part of the 25th Infantry Division based at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii. He deployed to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.

On November 27, 2004, Specialist Miller was killed in Bamian province, a central region of Afghanistan. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, he died from injuries sustained when his unit came under enemy small-arms fire during a combat operation.

Miller's death occurred during the third year of Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. By late 2004, operations had expanded across Afghanistan, with U.S. and coalition forces engaged in counterinsurgency and stabilization missions in provinces like Bamian.

The Department of Defense announced Miller's death on November 29, 2004. He was posthumously promoted from Private First Class to Specialist. His remains were returned to the United States.

Harley Miller is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the National Infantry Museum and on online veterans' memorials. His name is listed on the 25th Infantry Division's memorial at Schofield Barracks.
