Their Story

Sgt. 1st Class Daniel Edward Miller was a 43-year-old soldier from Rossford, Ohio. He served with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Brigade, 1st Infantry Division, based at Fort Riley, Kansas. His service included deployments to Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.

Miller died on August 24, 2007, in Herat province in western Afghanistan. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, he was killed by enemy small-arms fire during a dismounted patrol. No further specifics about the engagement were publicly released.

By 2007, Operation Enduring Freedom was in its sixth year. The Taliban had regrouped and intensified its insurgency, particularly in southern and eastern Afghanistan.
