U.S. Army Specialist Alexander Joel Miller, 21, of Clermont, Florida, was killed in action on July 31, 2009, in the Barge Matal district of Afghanistan's Nuristan province.
Their Story
Alexander Joel Miller was a 21-year-old specialist from Clermont, Florida, serving with Charlie Company, 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, based at Fort Drum, New York. His unit was deployed to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.
Miller died on July 31, 2009, in the remote Barge Matal district of Nuristan province. According to U.S. military reports, he was killed by enemy small-arms fire during a firefight with insurgent forces. The engagement occurred as American and Afghan troops were conducting operations in the volatile, mountainous region near the Pakistani border.
By mid-2009, the conflict in Afghanistan had intensified. U.S. forces were engaged in a major troop surge aimed at countering a resurgent Taliban. Nuristan province, with its rugged terrain and limited government control, was a frequent site of insurgent activity and complex, close-quarters combat.
The Department of Defense announced Miller's death on August 2, 2009. He was one of four U.S. service members killed in Afghanistan that day. His death brought the total number of American military fatalities in Operation Enduring Freedom to at least 745 at that point in the war.
Miller is memorialized on the Afghanistan War casualty lists and by veterans' organizations. His name is inscribed on the Afghanistan and Iraq War Memorial at Veterans Memorial Park in Clermont, Florida.
