Anthony Gary Mihalo, 23, of Naperville, Illinois, was a Corporal in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was killed in action on August 14, 2008, in Sangin, Afghanistan.

Their Story

Corporal Anthony Gary Mihalo was a 23-year-old Marine from Naperville, Illinois. He served with Echo Company, 2nd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, based at Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center Twentynine Palms, California.

According to the Department of Defense, Mihalo died on August 14, 2008, in the Sangin district of Afghanistan's Helmand province. The official casualty report listed the cause as hostile action. Specific details of the engagement were not publicly released, but the area was a known insurgent stronghold.

Mihalo's death occurred during a period of intense fighting in the Afghanistan War, known as Operation Enduring Freedom. By 2008, Taliban forces had regrouped, and the use of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and direct fire attacks against coalition forces was escalating, particularly in southern provinces like Helmand.

His death was reported by local and national news outlets, including the Chicago Tribune, which noted he was the 13th service member from Illinois to die in Afghanistan that year. The Marine Corps released a statement confirming his death and extending condolences to his family.

Mihalo is remembered on memorial walls in his hometown and by his unit. His name is inscribed on the Fallen Heroes Memorial in Naperville and is included in the online casualty lists maintained by the Department of Defense.
