Corporal William Kyle Middleton, 26, of Norfolk, Virginia, was a U.S. Army infantryman. He was killed in action in Ghoatamudkha, Afghanistan, on November 22, 2010.
Their Story
Corporal William Kyle Middleton was a 26-year-old soldier from Norfolk, Virginia. He served with Company A, 2nd Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.
On November 22, 2010, Middleton died from wounds sustained during a hostile incident in the village of Ghoatamudkha, in Afghanistan's Kandahar province. The Department of Defense stated his death was the result of enemy small-arms fire.
Middleton's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In late 2010, U.S. forces were engaged in a major troop surge, with intense counterinsurgency operations focused on southern provinces like Kandahar.
Following his death, Middleton was posthumously promoted from specialist to corporal. His funeral was held in Virginia Beach, Virginia. The Army released a statement expressing condolences to his family and friends.
Corporal Middleton's name is inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Virginia Beach Military Memorial. He is remembered by his unit and community as a dedicated soldier.
