SFC David Eliah Metzger, 32, of San Diego, California, was a U.S. Army Special Forces soldier. He died in Darreh-ye Bum, Afghanistan, on October 26, 2009.
Their Story
David Eliah Metzger was a 32-year-old U.S. Army Special Forces soldier from San Diego, California. He served as a Sergeant First Class with Company B, 3rd Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne), based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
On October 26, 2009, Metzger was killed by enemy small-arms fire during a combat operation in the village of Darreh-ye Bum, located in Afghanistan's Wardak province. The operation was part of a larger effort to clear insurgent forces from the area.
Metzger's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. The conflict involved coalition forces, the Afghan National Army, and insurgent groups including the Taliban and al-Qaeda.
The Department of Defense announced his death the following day. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and Meritorious Service Medal.
Metzger is remembered on memorials at Fort Bragg and by his unit. His name is inscribed on Panel 10W, Line 111 of the Afghanistan War Memorial at the National Infantry Museum.
