Daniel Thomas Metcalfe was a 29-year-old U.S. Army sergeant first class from Liverpool, New York. He served with Company D, 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, part of the 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team.
According to U.S. Department of Defense casualty reports, Metcalfe died on September 29, 2012, in Sayyid Abad, Wardak province, Afghanistan. The official cause was listed as hostile fire. Media reports from the time indicate his unit was engaged in combat operations in the volatile province, a known insurgent stronghold.
