U.S. Army Sergeant Jeffery Scott Mersman, 23, of Parker, Kansas, was killed in action on November 9, 2007, in Aranus, Afghanistan.

Their Story

Jeffery Scott Mersman was a 23-year-old sergeant from Parker, Kansas, serving with the U.S. Army's Company C, 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, based in Vicenza, Italy. He was deployed to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.

On November 9, 2007, Sergeant Mersman was killed in Aranus, a village in Afghanistan's Nuristan province. According to U.S. military reports, his unit was conducting a combat patrol when it came under small-arms fire from enemy forces. Mersman was fatally wounded during the engagement.

His death occurred during a period of intense fighting in Afghanistan's eastern provinces. By late 2007, Taliban and other insurgent forces had regrouped and were mounting a significant resurgence, particularly in remote, mountainous regions like Nuristan. U.S. and NATO forces were engaged in frequent, close-quarters combat during counterinsurgency operations.

Sergeant Mersman was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal with Valor and the Purple Heart. His remains were returned to the United States, and he was buried in his home state of Kansas.

He is remembered on memorials in Kansas and at the 173rd Airborne Brigade memorial in Italy. His name is inscribed on Panel 28E, Line 6 of the Afghanistan War Memorial at the National Infantry Museum in Georgia.
