Mendoza, Matthew Elias
Sgt. Matthew Elias Mendoza, 24, of San Antonio, Texas, was a U.S. Marine killed in Helmand province, Afghanistan, on June 20, 2008.
Their Story
Matthew Elias Mendoza was a 24-year-old sergeant from San Antonio, Texas. He served with Echo Company, 2nd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, based at Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center Twentynine Palms, California. The unit deployed to Afghanistan in early 2008 as part of a regular rotation of forces.
On June 20, 2008, Sgt. Mendoza was killed by hostile action in Helmand province, a volatile region in southern Afghanistan. The Department of Defense casualty announcement did not specify the exact nature of the incident, which was common for operational security reasons at the time. He was one of several Marines from his battalion killed during that deployment.
Mendoza died during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By 2008, the conflict's focus had shifted significantly to counterinsurgency operations in Afghanistan's southern and eastern provinces, where Taliban forces were most active. Helmand province was a major center of this fighting.
His death was reported by the San Antonio Express-News, which noted his local ties. He was survived by his parents and siblings. The 2nd Battalion, 7th Marines suffered some of the highest casualty rates of any Marine unit during its 2008 deployment, according to subsequent military reporting.
Sgt. Mendoza is memorialized on the 2nd Battalion, 7th Marines' unit memorial and on the 'Faces of the Fallen' online tribute maintained by the Washington Post. His name appears on Panel 52W, Line 28 of the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Twentynine Palms base.
