Lance Cpl. Norberto Mendez Hernandez, 22, of Logan, Utah, was a U.S. Marine killed in Helmand province, Afghanistan, on July 10, 2011.
Their Story
Norberto Mendez Hernandez was born in Logan, Utah. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, part of Regimental Combat Team 8, II Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward), based out of Camp Pendleton, California.
On July 10, 2011, Lance Cpl. Mendez Hernandez was killed while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan. The Department of Defense stated he died of wounds sustained from an improvised explosive device (IED) while on patrol.
His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In mid-2011, Helmand province was a major center of the conflict, with U.S. and allied forces engaged in intense counterinsurgency operations against Taliban fighters.
His body was returned to the United States. A funeral service was held in his hometown of Logan, Utah, where he was remembered by family, friends, and fellow service members.
Lance Cpl. Norberto Mendez Hernandez is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the University of Utah and on the online Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund 'Wall of Faces,' which includes casualties from later wars. He was one of 2356 American service members who died during Operation Enduring Freedom.
