Their Story
Andrew Nimr Mahmoud Meari was a 21-year-old from Plainfield, Illinois. He served as a Private First Class in the United States Army, assigned to Alpha Company, 1st Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division.
On November 1, 2010, Meari was killed by enemy small-arms fire while on guard duty at Combat Outpost Senjaray in the Zhari district of Kandahar province, Afghanistan. The outpost was located in a volatile area west of Kandahar city, a region heavily contested by insurgent forces.
Meari's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In late 2010, the Zhari district was a focal point for coalition operations, including efforts to secure key population centers and highways from Taliban influence.
His death was reported by the Department of Defense. He was survived by his parents and siblings. A local newspaper noted his family described him as a proud soldier who was dedicated to his unit.
Pfc. Meari is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Plainfield Veterans Memorial and is listed on the 101st Airborne Division's casualty roster from the conflict.
